Intensive English Program courses begin three times a year, following the academic calendar of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Review upcoming program dates, application deadlines, costs, payments, and policies on this page.
Dates and Deadlines
Fall and Spring terms are 15 weeks which includes 1 week of registration/orientation and 14 weeks of instruction. Summer terms are 9 weeks which includes 1 week of registration/orientation and 8 weeks of instruction.

Explanation of University Fees
General Fee
A fee comprised of debt service, facility renewal and replacement funds, campus administrative charges, and general University charges; distributed to auxiliary service units (State Farm Center, Athletic Facilities, Campus Recreation, Career Center, Counseling Center, Illini Union, McKinley Health Center, and Student Services and Arcade Buildings).
Service Fee
A fee composed of categories for salaries, programming, general expenses, and utilities; distributed to auxiliary service units (State Farm Center, Campus Recreation, Career Center, Illini Union, and Student Services and Arcade Buildings).
Health Service Fee
A fee assessed to all students for salaries, programming, general expenses, and utilities; distributed to the Counseling Center and McKinley Health Center. This is separate from Health Insurance Fee
Transportation Fee
A fee that supports a campus and community transportation plan for student. Students can ride the C-U public transportation system for free with ID Card.
IEI Tuition and Fee Payment Policy
- Tuition and fees must be paid for all students registered for classes at the IEI.
- Tuition and fees are due at registration.
Methods of Payment
Payments by Wire Transfer (preferred payment method)
- Click or go to https://www.flywire.com/school/iei-uiuc to begin the payment process. Please make sure that you know your UIN (located on admission letter and invoice).
- Please note the following important wire transfer information:
- This is ONLY for payments made to the Intensive English Institute.
- This is ONLY for payments made from an International bank.
- This is NOT for payments made from a U.S. bank.
- The Intensive English Institute is the ONLY office that can confirm your payment.
- You MUST email iei@illinois.edu to confirm receipt of payment.
In-Person Payments
- Payments may be made on the day of registration at the Intensive English Institute.
- The following payment methods will be accepted:
- Cashier’s check or Money Order only – no personal checks or cash are accepted.
- Visa and MasterCard are accepted for in-person payments. All credit card transactions will be assessed a non-refundable 2.4% service fee on the total amount due.
Student Withdrawal
- If the student comes the U.S. on an IEI I-20 and withdraws before the first day of class, there is a $1000 pre-registration withdrawal fee.
- If the student withdraws during the first week of class,
- 50% of the IEI educational fee can be refunded.
- University required fees cannot be refunded.
- If the student withdraws after the first week of class,
- The IEI educational fee cannot be refunded
- University required fees cannot be refunded.
IEI Discount Policies
Family Discounts
The IEI offers tuition discounts to full-time students who are related to a current employee or matriculated student of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
- A $250 discount will be offered the first semester of a spring or fall term ($150 discount for the summer term).
- Spouses, children, parents, and siblings of the UIUC employee or student are eligible for the discount.
- After the first semester, these family members are eligible for the standard IEI returners’ discount of $250/semester ($150 in the summer).
- Discounts can only be given at the time of billing for the current semester to which it applies.
- IEI students who use agents or receive other discounts through special group agreements are not eligible for the family discount.
- Discounts cannot be applied retroactively.
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Staff Discounts
The IEI sometimes offers tuition discounts to people who work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This is done on a case by case basis and not offered during all semesters. Please contact iei@illinois.edu for more information.
IEI Tuition Refund Policy
Student Withdrawal

Non-Refundable Fees
The following fees are not refundable:
- Application fee
- Express mail fee
- Any early registration fee
- Any late registration/placement test fee
- University fees
- University student health insurance
Important Notes
- Refunds are processed by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, not by the IEI.
- You cannot receive cash or a check from the IEI.
- It may take several weeks for the university to process your refund.
- If you are a student sponsored by SACM, please note the following:
- If you have paid your own tuition to the IEI and are later issued a financial guarantee fromSACM you will not be able to get a refund from the IEI.
- You will need to request the refund directly from SACM.
- If you have a documented health reason for leaving the IEI, please note the following:
- You may apply 50% of your paid tuition towards a future semester within one year.
IEI Part-Time Student Tuition Rates
Tuition for part-time students is based on the number of classes a student takes and the number of hours each class meets every week. Most part-time students will take two courses. Sometimes a part-time student will only take one course.

What courses will you take?
First, you will take the IEI’s placement test. Based on your test results, you will be placed into one of our 6 proficiency levels-100-600. You can choose which course(s) you want to take after you know your level. The IEI cannot tell you how much your course(s) will cost before you take the placement test and you choose your course(s). You cannot choose courses that are not at your level. Each level has the following courses:
Advanced Courses
- Listening and Speaking – 6 Hours per Week
- Reading and Writing – 6 Hours per Week
- Electives (these change each semester) – 4 Hours per Week
Intermediate Courses
- Listening and Speaking – 6 Hours per Week
- Reading and Writing – 6 Hours per Week
- Grammar – 4 Hours per Week
- Electives (these change each semester) – 4 Hours per Week
Basic Courses
- Listening and Speaking – 6 Hours per Week
- Reading and Writing – 5 Hours per Week
- Grammar – 5 Hours per Week
- Pronunciation – 4 Hours per Week
