Research

The Intensive English Institute (IEI) encourages and supports research activity at the University of Illinois.  At the same time, the IEI must look out for the interests of its students and teachers to be sure that any participation in research is voluntary and that no particular class or group of students is overburdened.

Procedures for Requesting Access to IEI Students and Classes for Research

General questions about the feasibility of the involvement of IEI students and teachers in a research project should be directed to the Academic Director (Kristin Bouton) via email (bouton@illinois.edu).  

Applying for permission to conduct research with IEI students:

Step 1

All University of Illinois and Departmental research board requests must be completed in advance.  The researcher should present a copy of review board approval (and approved consent forms) to the IEI at the time of making the request to conduct research.  

Step 2

The researcher should provide a short description of the research project to the IEI.  The description should clearly outline:

1. What sort of subjects are sought and how many?
2. What method of contact is sought and what sort of time commitment does it require?  If the researcher is requesting access to IEI classes, the type of class, and the number of class hours and period of time should be specified.

If the research project is approved:

Step 3

The researcher should compose a letter of invitation to IEI students to participate in the research and submit the letter to the Academic Director (Kristin Bouton) via email (bouton@illinois.edu) for advice and approval. 

Step 4

The researcher should schedule a meeting with the Academic Director (Kristin Bouton) to discuss how students and teachers will be contacted. 

Step 5

The IEI requests a courtesy copy of papers submitted for university coursework or published papers which are based on the approved research project.
